Giving: a night of shelter costs about $75.

That is the shelter’s whole cost last year — the house, food, an advocate on every shift — divided by 6,840 nights. Gifts with no strings pay for what is needed this month; the state grant pays for what it was given for. Both are explained on the Financials page.

Demonstration: the button opens an email; no card is taken. On a real site this is the organization’s own giving page. Gifts are tax-deductible as the law allows; a statement goes out each January. Donors are never listed by name.

from the thrift store last year — a fifth of the budget, and the one income line with no strings at all. It pays for what the grants cannot: the hotel room at 2 a.m., the moving-in box, the bus fare.

The store is public and cheerful and has nothing to do with the shelter’s location. Drop-offs go to the back door during store hours; larger furniture by arrangement.
